Perth UV Destroys Gelcoat Fast

Perth has one of the highest UV indexes in the world — regularly exceeding 11 in summer. Combined with constant salt air exposure, unprotected gelcoat oxidises quickly, turning dull, chalky and faded. Standard washing won't fix this. Paint correction will.

Our multi-stage machine correction process uses progressively finer compounds to strip back oxidation, remove swirl marks and scratches, and restore the original depth and gloss locked beneath the damaged surface layer.

Paint correction is also the essential first step before any ceramic coating — you cannot coat over a damaged surface. We correct first, then protect.

How We Correct Your Gelcoat

1️⃣
Surface Assessment
We inspect the gelcoat under LED lighting to identify oxidation depth, swirl marks, scratches and surface defects before choosing the right correction approach.
2️⃣
Wash & Decontamination
Full wash to remove salt, grime and loose contaminants. Clay bar treatment to remove embedded contamination that washing alone can't remove.
3️⃣
Stage 1 — Heavy Compound
Machine polisher with cutting compound removes deep oxidation, scratches and heavy swirl marks. This stage does the heavy lifting.
4️⃣
Stage 2 — Polish
Finer polish refines the surface, removing any micro-scratches left by stage 1 and beginning to restore gloss and depth.
5️⃣
Stage 3 — Finishing Polish
Final finishing polish brings out maximum gloss and clarity. Surface is inspected under LED lighting to ensure all defects are corrected.

When Does Your Boat Need Paint Correction?

If your gelcoat looks chalky, has visible scratches, heavy swirl marks or has lost its depth and gloss, it needs correction — not just polishing. We assess your gelcoat honestly and recommend the minimum stages needed to get the best result.

Paint Correction vs Hull Polishing

Hull polishing uses lighter compounds suited for maintenance. Paint correction uses cutting compounds for more serious defects. We'll recommend the right approach after assessing your vessel at no charge.

6️⃣
Protection Applied
Marine-grade sealant or carnauba wax applied as a final protective layer — or we proceed directly to ceramic coating for long-term protection.

Why Perth Boats Need Paint Correction

☀️
UV Index 11+
Perth's summer UV index regularly exceeds 11 — the maximum on the standard scale. Unprotected gelcoat oxidises visibly within a single season.
🌊
Salt Air Acceleration
Salt air from the Indian Ocean and Cockburn Sound accelerates surface corrosion and oxidation, particularly on white and light-coloured gelcoat.
💨
The Fremantle Doctor
Perth's famous afternoon sea breeze carries salt spray and fine particles that settle on surfaces and degrade gelcoat and clear coatings over time.
💧
Hard Water Staining
Perth's hard water leaves calcium and mineral deposits on gelcoat that attract further contamination and cause water spotting and staining.
